CAAL2008 - Beer-Sheva
New Approaches for Computer Applications in the Archaeology and the Cultural Heritage of the Levant
An Internationl Conference on the use of computers in recording, managing, analysis and interpretation of archaeological data
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Beer-Sheva, 14-15 May 2008

Computer applications in archaeology is a rapidly growing field which includes 3D modeling, Virtual Reality, internet applications, GIS, and Cultural Heritage Management and research. They are beginning to be used in many new and interesting ways, which reflect a development from a culture of circulation based on the written word towards a postmodern culture of simulation and complexity, in which computers are becoming the means of new research approach and new research questions. shifting from merely more sophisticated tools to true methodological and theoretical research frameworks.

This computer-based medium of discourse is replacing traditional methods of communication, so that contemporary living and working practices are becoming rapidly enmeshed within digital environments - and archaeology has not been excepted from this. Computer applications are now part of the normal recording, managing, analysis and interpretation of archaeological data - even if such data are acquired by traditional means of archaeological survey and excavation. It is the aim of this conference to present the problems and prospects for such applications in archaeology in the Levant.

The conference will be held at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel, in May 2008. This conference will bring together both established scholars and young researchers in archaeology and cultural heritage who are actively studying past cultures and landscapes within the Levant and the Near East, and who are hoping to improve networks within specific computer application disciplines as well as open a dialogue between members of different disciplines. We welcome all researchers wishing to express ideas, projects and questions.

Guest speakers:
Gary Lock (Oxford University)
Kennet Kvamme (University of Arkansas)
Franco Niccolucci (Cyprus Institute)
Sorin Hermon (University of Florence)
