EPOCH is committed to provide valuable tools to the scientific community and this web site aims at becoming to one-stop access to all the software available for ICT applications to tangible Cultural Heritage. We have searched the web for existing tools and you may access from the table below a list of links to Open Source or commercial software for such applications. Presence in the list does not necessarily mean endorsement by EPOCH nor guarantees suitability or good performance. Very soon it will be possible to download from this page many modules created or improved by EPOCH as well as to access information and documentation about them. AVAILABLE TOOLS AND MODULES MESHLAB One of the EPOCH's tools already available and used by many people is Meshlab Sourceforge, an open source portable and extendible system for the processing of unstructured 3D triangular meshes. You can already freely download and test the latest version at http://meshlab.sourceforge.net. 3D WEBSERVICE The University of Leuven has developed a novel tool to produce 3D models at very low cost, which is now available for free use to Epoch partners and other Cultural Heritage organisations. It suffices to take normal photographs of the object to be modeled. These images can be uploaded to Leuven's web tool, which turns the photos into 3D reconstructions. The tool can be found here. But before testing the system, please-please read the manual! Recently, the service has been used during archaeological investigations in the city of Malines (Belgium). The remains of a building (spicarium) from the 13th-14th century were captured and reconstructed in 3D. The reconstruction of one patch of the building's facade is shown in this short movie (.avi). Another movie shows the registration of several patches in order to reconstruct the whole facade. You can download it here (.mpg). The list below, elaborated by WP 3.3, is a starting point. Please send us info/links for tools you are aware of (and their status: open source, freeware as binaries, commercial). We will gradually expand this list and put in on the website.Click on one of the squares of the matrix to go to the relevant section. Last update: 22-6-2006 |
